VICE News was nominated for 9 Emmy awards in 2018. In typical VICE fashion, we wanted to send less-than-subtle message to our biggest competitor: The New York TimeS. So naturally, we bought out an ad in The New York Times Sunday paper to announce the nominations. Below is some lines I wrote that were mocked by the VirtuE design team, and above is the ad that was published in the Sunday edition of The New York Times on August 19th, 2018.

CONCEPT

Virtue Worldwide has their HQ in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

Dumbo is known for it’s cobblestoned streets, expensive coffee, charming views of the Manhattan bridge and for the hordes of tourists that travel there daily to photograph it. During a lull between projects, we decided to involve ourselves in the seemingly endless selfie cycle occurring daily outside our office.

Each week for about a year we planted disposable cameras at this peak selfie-taking spot. Tourists come, take a selfie with our film cameras and then leave forever. We then publish these photographs on an Instagram account (@Olympia_Point) so they can find their photo later.
